There's quite a few hot springs and pools that you can go to through the tour companies in La Fortuna. As a couple of poor hitchhiking college students, we had to find out where to go without money. I loved it so much, I couldn't imagine paying. The locals have a couple swimming spots they go to under bridges. The first one was a cold swimming hole.
The second one was hotsprings in the river. You have to be aware of theft, so don't bring valuables. Also Taxi's are expensive, but if you could get a ride or a group in a Taxi, it would be safer then leaving your car out for break ins.
